High definition television essentials
Date: August 3, 2004
So, you took the plunge and plunked down some hard earned cash for your new high definition television. Have you gotten everything you need to get the most performance out of your new plasma, lcd or rear-projection television? Getting a high definition television is more than just “plug-and-play”. Read on…
Some high definition flat panel televisions are actually just “monitors”. That is, they don’t come with speakers so you’ll need to buy your own and, most likely, a tuner so you’ll be able to “tune” to the television stations to watch. Many plasma and lcd televisions come with just the basic speakers around the monitor. To truly enjoy the theatrical experience that comes with buying a big screen tv, you’ll want to partner it up with an equally impressive audio system.
I’m assuming your new high definition television truly is hdtv and not “hdtv-ready”. If you’re not sure, read the instruction manual or contact the retailer where you purchased it. If your new plasma, lcd or rear-projection tv is only hdtv-ready, you’ll need to buy a separate hdtv-receiver in order to receive and decode high definition signals (you can still watch regular television without it).
Finally consider replacing the wiring that comes with your new high definition television with some high quality wires from Monster Cable and other reputable manufacturers. Having inferior-quality cables to connect all the components together (dvd, speakers, etc.) only acts as a bottleneck to signal transmission. You’ve spent a lot on a quality plasma, lcd or rear-projection television so don’t skimp on this. After all, you wouldn’t partner a Mercedes sports car with tire rims from Yugo would you? Don’t do it with your new high-end television either.
